Lawrence App grew up in a musical family in the Washington DC area where he studied piano, guitar, and voice as a youth. After performing with several church and club groups, Lawrence began touring in 1974 with various variety, jazz, and Latin ensembles. In 1980, he relocated to Florida and co-founded the Caribbean-pop group Windjammer, a band he still performs with on a part-time basis. After many years of successful performances and recordings with Windjammer, he went back to school, earning a B.M. in Jazz Studies from the University of North Florida and an M.M. in ethnomusicology from Florida State.
