In China, acrobats are revered as much as prima ballerinas, opera divas or rock stars are in the West, and for good reason. It takes years of rigorous training to achieve the level of strength, flexibility and grace evident in the performance and stage presence of the 20 members of the Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats. In the Chinese tradition, aspiring acrobats begin training as early as four years of age, moving from the basics – balancing, tumbling, dancing, flexibility and strength – to many years spent cultivating and honing specific acrobatic talents, finally culminating in stage performance at age sixteen or seventeen.
